Your insurer cannot tell you where to take your car.

Many drivers don't know this. Your insurer may strongly recommend their network repairers, but you are not obligated to use them.

Under Australian consumer law, you have the right to choose your own repairer. If you want the workshop to fix your car, that's your call.

When lodging your claim, simply say: "My preferred repairer is Smash Repair Workshop in North Narrabeen." They must work with us.

Tell your insurer this.

Exact wording to use when you call:

Say this word for word

"My preferred repairer is Smash Repair Workshop in North Narrabeen. Please arrange for them to assess and repair my vehicle."

If they push back, ask to speak to a supervisor. You can also call us. We deal with these conversations every day.

What your rights look like in practice

Three things every driver should know before calling their insurer after an accident.

You choose the repairer, not your insurance company. Their preferred repairer list is a suggestion, not a requirement.

If you're not at fault and the other driver's details are known, you may be able to claim without paying your excess.

All repairs must meet manufacturer standards. You are entitled to a full factory-quality repair, not just cosmetic fixes.

After an accident

Exactly what to do, step by step.

From the moment it happens to driving away in a repaired car.

1

Make sure everyone is safe

Move off the road if possible. Call 000 if anyone is injured. Exchange details: name, licence number, registration plate, insurer.

2

Document everything

Photograph both vehicles, their position, and all visible damage. Take wide shots and close-ups. More is always better. Your insurer will ask.

3

Call us first

Before you lodge your claim, call the workshop on 02 0000 0000. We'll tell you exactly what to say to your insurer and make sure you're not disadvantaged.

4

Lodge your claim

Call your insurer and nominate the workshop as your preferred repairer. Provide your photos and the other driver's details. We'll handle everything from there.

5

Drop your car off

Bring your car to North Narrabeen. We'll do a full assessment and give you an accurate timeline.

6

Pick it up, good as new

We contact your insurer, complete all repairs to factory standard, and call you when it's ready. You pay only your excess (if applicable).

Common Questions

Insurance repairs, answered.

Can my insurance company force me to use their repairer?
No. Under Australian consumer law, you have the right to choose your own repairer. Your insurer may recommend their preferred network repairers, but you are not legally obligated to use them. You can nominate Smash Repair Workshop and your insurer must work with us on your claim. If they push back, ask to speak to a supervisor. Call us and we can help.
Is the workshop a Youi preferred repairer?
Yes. Smash Repair Workshop is an approved Youi Insurance preferred repairer in North Narrabeen. If you're insured with Youi, simply nominate us when lodging your claim and we'll work directly with Youi's assessors to get your car repaired efficiently.
How long does an insurance smash repair take on the Northern Beaches?
Minor panel repairs typically take 2–4 business days. More extensive collision damage usually takes 5–10 business days depending on parts availability and the extent of the repair. We'll give you an accurate timeframe after we assess your vehicle, and we'll keep you updated throughout the process.
Do I need to pay an excess?
If the accident was at fault, you'll pay your policy excess directly to us when you collect your car. If you're not at fault and the other driver's details are known, you may not need to pay any excess, and in some cases you can recover it from the at-fault driver's insurer. We can advise based on your specific situation.
What if I don't want to go through insurance?
No problem. We do private-pay repairs as well. Often it makes sense for minor damage where a claim might affect your premium. Call us with the details and we'll quote you honestly. Sometimes private pay is the better option, sometimes it's not. We'll tell you which.
What areas on the Northern Beaches do you service?
We're based in North Narrabeen and serve the entire Northern Beaches: Narrabeen, Mona Vale, Warriewood, Collaroy, Dee Why, Manly, Newport, Palm Beach, and everywhere in between. Most customers drive to us, but call if you're unsure.
